Motorcycle Wheel Size Guide: How to Read, Measure and Choose

Motorcycle wheel size is written as two numbers — rim diameter × rim width, both in inches — and those two numbers decide which tires fit, how the bike steers, and what a custom wheelset must be built to. This guide explains how to read them, how to measure them correctly, and how sizing decisions play out on real custom projects.

What does a wheel size like 17×3.5 mean?

The first number is the rim diameter, measured where the tire bead actually seats — not at the outer lip of the rim. A "17-inch wheel" is 17 inches at the bead seat, which is why a tape measure across the outside of the rim reads larger.

Spec the wheel around the tire, not the other way around. Decide the tire size your market or your build needs first, then choose a rim width inside that tire's approved range.
Check the tire maker's chart for the exact model. Approved ranges vary between manufacturers and models, so the published chart for your specific tire is the final authority.

What changes when you change wheel size?

Custom projects often adjust sizes — wider rears for bigger rubber, different fronts for stance or handling. Four things must be checked before any change is locked:

Instrumentation. Speedometer and ABS calibration read wheel rotation; a diameter change alters both.
Geometry. Diameter changes shift ride height, rake and trail — front-end feel changes with them.
Clearance. Wider wheels and tires must clear the swingarm, chain line, fender and fork legs.
Tire availability. An unusual rim size can strand you with two tire choices instead of twenty.
