Finish is not cosmetic trim on a wheel order — it drives unit cost, production lead time, warranty exposure and how the wheel looks after two seasons of road salt. A motorcycle wheel finish is a protective and decorative surface system applied after machining. Anodizing converts the aluminium surface itself into 5–25 µm of aluminium oxide (Type II) or 25–50 µm (Type III hard anodize) — thin, hard, and limited to a narrower colour palette. Mechanical polishing adds no layer at all: it is labour that creates a mirror surface, which then oxidises unless clear-coated or maintained. PVD is a vacuum-deposited metallic film under about 1 µm, applied over a base-and-topcoat system, and is the most expensive and slowest of the four. The Four Finish Families, Defined

Powder Coating

Dry polymer powder — usually polyester or epoxy-polyester — is applied electrostatically to a pre-treated wheel, then cured in an oven. Typical film build is 60–120 µm, and typical cure schedules sit around 180–200 °C. That cure window matters on forged 6061-T6 wheels: the schedule has to stay controlled so the coating fully cross-links without pushing the part into prolonged high-temperature exposure that would over-age the T6 temper. Powder gives you any RAL or Pantone-matched colour, gloss, satin or matte, plus textured and candy effects. It is also effectively solvent-free, which simplifies life for EU importers watching VOC exposure.

Anodizing

Anodizing is electrochemical, not additive in the coating sense — it grows an aluminium oxide layer partly into and partly out of the existing surface, so dimensions barely move. Type II sulphuric anodize (5–25 µm) is the decorative and protective standard and accepts dyes. Type III hard anodize (25–50 µm) is thicker and far more abrasion-resistant, but the colour range collapses toward dark greys, bronzes and black. One point buyers should hear before they commit: 6061 contains silicon and magnesium, so it does not anodize to the bright water-clear tone that 6063 or 5052 gives. Expect a slightly warmer, greyer cast and some batch-to-batch variation on large colour-critical orders.

Mechanical Polishing

Polishing is a labour finish. Successive abrasive and buffing stages bring bare aluminium to a mirror, removing a small amount of material as they go. There is no protective layer unless a clear coat is added afterwards (typically 20–40 µm). Bare polished aluminium will haze and oxidise — that is chemistry, not a defect — so it is a finish for show bikes, dealership display units and owners who accept regular polishing. A clear coat slows oxidation but introduces its own failure mode: if it lifts at the edge, the whole face has to be stripped and redone.

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition)

PVD deposits a metallic film in a vacuum chamber — chrome-look, gunmetal, gold and black tones are the common decorative sets. The metal layer itself is under about 1 µm, so on aluminium wheels it is run as a system: a levelling base coat, the PVD layer, then a clear topcoat. Because the film is so thin, it reproduces whatever is underneath, including machining marks — substrate preparation is the whole game. PVD is hard, brilliant and chemically stable, but it is a batch vacuum process with high fixed cost, a narrow colour set and no repair path. Damage means refinishing the wheel from bare metal.

Machined Face and Two-Tone Combinations

The finish that actually sells hardest in dealer channels is a combination: the wheel is coated or anodized in one colour, then the spoke faces or rim lip are diamond-cut back to bright aluminium and clear-coated. Two-tone splits — black barrel with a bronze face, gunmetal with a polished lip — read as premium at a fraction of PVD cost. They do add a second setup and a second cure or coat cycle, so price and lead time land above single-colour powder.

How Finish Choice Affects Cost, Lead Time and Warranty

Cost. Finish is one of the largest single swings in a wheel quotation after size and material. Single-colour powder is the baseline; anodizing adds process cost; every extra colour, mask, diamond-cut operation or hand-polish stage adds labour; PVD adds a premium vacuum batch process on top of a base and topcoat that already resembles a full paint system.

Lead time. Powder coating fits inside a normal production flow, so it does not extend your delivery date. Polishing is bounded by how fast hands can work. Anodizing and PVD are batch processes — they run when the tank or chamber is loaded, so small orders can wait for a batch window. PVD is the one to plan around specifically: budget about 15 extra days on top of standard production, which includes transport to and from the coating facility. Build that into any date you promise a customer.

Warranty and returns. Finish complaints, not structural ones, drive most wheel returns. Powder coat gives you the easiest remedy path because it can be stripped and recoated. Bare polished wheels generate the most support tickets, because owners read normal oxidation as a defect — set that expectation at point of sale. PVD carries the highest cost of failure since there is no partial repair.

Compliance and Documentation Points Buyers Miss

Pre-treatment chemistry. The layer under the finish decides how long the finish lasts. Hexavalent chromium sits on the REACH Authorisation List maintained by the European Chemicals Agency, and the industry has moved toward chrome-free pre-treatments — you can check the current entries on the ECHA Authorisation List. If you are importing into the EU, ask what the pre-treatment is — not just what colour the wheel is.

Marking legibility. Approval and traceability marks — JWL/VIA, DOT, ECE E-mark, plus part and batch identifiers — are cast, machined or stamped into the wheel. They must still be readable after finishing. Thin systems such as anodizing preserve them easily; heavy or repeated coat builds can soften them. This is a routine inspection point at customs and at dealer level, so it belongs on your incoming checklist.

Corrosion testing. Neutral salt spray to ASTM B117 is the usual comparative test for a coating system. Note that the standard itself defines the test environment, not a pass mark — hours vary widely by system and pre-treatment, so ask for the report covering the exact system you are quoted rather than accepting a generic figure.

Magnesium is a different conversation. Magnesium cannot be left bare or simply polished — it needs a conversion coating plus a full primer and topcoat system, because unprotected magnesium corrodes readily and is sensitive to galvanic contact at hub and fastener interfaces.
